The dominant vector of Polish-Roma relations is stretched on the axis marked by aversion and ignorance. Aversion, despite the fact that public opinion polls systematically record a decline in its level, is still expressed by a significant proportion of Poles. Lack of knowledge, or rather colloquial images and stereotypes (also the positive ones) are limited to a few figures and phantasms: a fairy, a blacksmith, a Gypsy king, a violinist and a dancer, but also a wastrel, a thief, and sometimes even a child abductor. Only a handful of Roma culture enthusiasts have a broader and deeper knowledge. This group is fortunately growing, and the number of sources of reliable knowledge have been increasing in recent years. In the last decade, apart from many local activities and undertakings organised mainly by the Roma themselves, several important events have taken place – the film “Papusza” directed by Joanna Kos-Krauze and Krzysztof Krauze, the publication of the literary report “Papusza” by Angelika Ku\u017aniak, collections of reports by Lidia Osta\u0142owska, Jacek Milewski’s short stories and the reissue of Jerzy Ficowski’s classics, “Gypsies on Polish roads” and “Demons of other people’s fear”. All of the above had the effect of drawing the attention of a wider public to Roma issues.<\/p>\n

We would like to reach out to all those who are intrigued by the culture of the Roma, who are looking for knowledge and information, who want not only to satisfy their curiosity, but also to experience the joy of dealing with art, literature and poetry. To those who want to reach out also to traditional sources – to books that are rarer, more difficult to access, often completely absent or forgotten in circulation beyond the professional or academic circle.<\/p>\n

Despite appearances, the literature dedicated to the Roma is quite rich. It includes the oldest texts – para-scientific, causal, literary – often burdened with the authors’ prejudices and inaccurate theories about the origin and essence of the Roma culture. It consists of the first works valuable for science, written by authors from the late 18th and early 19th century (Tadeusz Czacki, Ignacy Dani\u0142owicz, Teodor Narbutt) and works of linguists published in the interwar period and after World War II (Izydor Kopernicki, Edward Klich, Jan M. Rozwadowski, Tadeusz Pobo\u017cniak). A breakthrough in Polish Romology was the publication of Jerzy Ficowski’s book “Cyganie Polscy, szkice historyczno – obyczajowe” (“Polish Gypsies, Historical and Moral Sketches”) in 1953. The work is devoted both to the history of the Roma and to areas of Roma life never before described to such an extent – culture and folklore. Today, the student of Romology, apart from Ficowski’s works, can choose from a substantial library written by authors no less classic (Adam Bartosz, Andrzej Mirga, Lech Mr\u00f3z, S\u0142awomir Kapralski) and a large group of younger scholars, journalists, including the Roma themselves (among others,\u00a0 Edward D\u0119bicki, Karol Parno Gierli\u0144ski, Izolda Kwiek, Andrzej Mirga, Jan Mirga, Teresa Mirga, Stanis\u0142aw Stankiewicz, Edward Grafo G\u0142owacki) – authors of both popular-scientific and literary works.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
